What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that affects the body’s blood sugar levels. It starts with the body’s ability to produce insulin. Insulin is used to transport energy to cells. If this transfer does not occur, sugar stays in the blood.

When you eat, the body turns food into sugar. At this point in the process, insulin should be released from the pancreas. If there is not enough insulin for proper function, then diabetes occurs.

While there is no cure, it can be managed with diet and exercise. It is important to eat a healthy diet, exercise, test blood sugar, and be under a doctor’s care and advice.

The rise of diabetes is due to the modern lifestyle which is more sedentary. Also, the overall changes in diets from previous generations may be a factor.
