Cape Gooseberry health benefits are many. The Cape Gooseberry is a small round berry that resembles a small yellow tomato.  The size is from the size of a pea or blueberry to a large marble. They are slightly sweet. Cape gooseberries are also known as yellow berries, Peruvian cherries, Aztec berries, Inca berries, golden berries. It grows inside a husk that is both bitter and insoluble.  While Cape Gooseberries have many health benefits, they are toxic if eaten unripe.

The cape gooseberry is native to Brazil, Chile and Peru. It is now grown in many nations and continents worldwide including South Africa, England, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Columbia and various parts of South America.

These berries can be used in many ways. Eat them raw like a raisin or grape or used in salads or cooked dishes.  Use them in jams, jellies, chutneys and sauces.

If you find a source of cape gooseberries, they grow only for a short season and only keep up to five days refrigerated.  So be sure to eat them fresh and before they spoil

The cape gooseberry contains twice the Vitamin C of lemons. It also contains Vitamin A. Both Vitamins A and C are good for the immune system. These yellow berries also contain B vitamins, which are good for energy.

Minerals

Calcium and phosphorus are both contained in these berries. Those minerals are good for the bones. Iron is also in Cape Gooseberries. Iron is good for red blood cells.

Folk medicine considers these berries to have anti-cancer properties. They may be beneficial against lung cancer. The roots may be beneficial against skin tumors.

Anti-Oxidants

They have more anti-oxidants than goji berries, which are well known for their anti-oxident properties. Anti-oxidants are beneficial against cancer and heart disease.

These yellow berries are low in fat and calories which is good news for dieters. Cape gooseberry tea can be sipped to help lower blood sugar.

Cape gooseberry tea is also useful to sip in times of colds or flu. It can also help with laryngitis.
